Ofloxacin, the active constituent is a quinolone/fluoroquinolone type of antimicrobial. It has bactericidal action. It helps to block the replication of bacterial DNA by attaching itself to an enzyme called DNA gyrase, which facilitates untwisting that is necessary for replication of one DNA double helix into two. Ofloxacin particularly has 100 times greater affinity towards bacterial DNA gyrase than mammalian. It is a broad-spectrum anti-microbial and thus sis effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
