The action mechanism of Minipress XL in causing hypotension is unknown. However, it has been found that the drug reduces total peripheral resistance. The drug was originally believed to have a direct action vascular smooth muscle, but it studies have suggested that prazosin has a vasodilator effect by blocking postsynaptic alpha-adrenoceptors, which is why it is called an alpha-blocker. Postsynaptic alpha-adrenoceptors have vasoconstriction-like effects. By lowering blood pressure, Minipress XL helps the blood to flow freely across the body.

Dose

• Minipress XL comes in 2.5 mg and 5 mg pills, which are to be taken orally, usually two or three times a day. Please check with your doctor to know more about the dosage of this drug.
• Make sure you go through the directions advised by your doctor. Take Minipress XL exactly as directed and do not overdose with it.
• Your physician may start you on Minipress XL 2.5 mg as it is the low dose of prazosin for a few days. Once your body gets used to the drug, your physician may gradually increase the dose.
• Its active drug prazosin controls high blood pressure but it does not cure the condition. So, continue taking Minipress Xl even if you feel good. Do not stop the treatment of your own volition.
• Swallow the whole pill with a glass of water. You can take it with food or milk to prevent any kind of gastric irritation. Do not chew or break the pill before consumption.

Precautions

• Before using Minipress XL, tell your doctor if you are allergic to prazosin or any other alpha-blocker like alfuzosin, doxazosin, etc.
• More importantly, tell your doctor what other medications you are taking, especially other high blood pressure drugs like beta-blockers or erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs like sildenafil, tadalafil, etc.
• Tell your physician if you have medical conditions such as narcolepsy or any other conditions before taking Minipress XL.
• If you are pregnant or are breastfeeding, please check with your doctor to understand whether you can take medicines containing prazosin.
• If you are supposed to have any surgery, including any kind of dental surgery, tell your surgeon or dentist that you are taking Minipress XL.

Warnings

• You should know that Minipress XL could make you a bit sleepy, drowsy, or dizzy. Therefore, it is inadvisable to drive a car or operate machinery while you are under the influence of prazosin.
• Avoid alcoholic beverages, illegal substances, like cannabis (marijuana) while you are taking Minipress XL. Alcohol or legal drugs can worsen the side effects of this drug.
• It is important to note that this medication can cause lightheadedness or fainting while you suddenly get up from a lying or sitting position so get up slowly when you take this medicine.
• Talk to your PCP about the benefits and risks of taking Minipress XL if you are 65 or above. Older adults are more susceptible to the side effects of prazosin.
• If you miss your dose, take it as soon as you remember but avoid it if the next dose is scheduled. Avoid overdosing to compensate for the missed dose.
• Store the medicine away from children, pets, and other people who are not advised to take this high blood pressure drug.
