Dose

For adults, the standard dose of generic Ampicillin is 250 mg four times in a day. It is prescribed as dosage of 100 mg to 150 mg three times in a day for the pediatric patients. Depending upon the stage of the bacterial infection, the dose can be increased to 500 mg thrice in a day. When the patient is having the ear, nose, or throat infections, the dose of 200 to 400 mg 4 times in day is taken. If the person is suffering from bacterial infections in the intestines, this medication is recommended to be taken in dose of 250 mg to 400 mg thrice in a day.
Generic Ampicillin dosage in meningitis patients is 250 mg twice in a day. Its dosage is 500 mg thrice in a day for the patients suffering from sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea. It should be taken on an empty stomach, 1 hour before the lunch or 2 to 3 hours after the lunch. Swallow this medication as whole, do not crush, chew, or open them. Missing this drug dosage can give the bacterium that wasn't killed completely to regrow and restart an infection.
Over dose must be avoided because it leads to the serious health complications. Over dose of generic Ampicillin is noted to cause loss of sensation in the toes or fingers, tremor in muscles, weakness, pain or twitching, convulsions, and perplexity. In serious cases over dose may even result to coma or even sudden death.

Side Effects

Side effects of generic Ampicillin that can affect your health seriously include anaphylaxis, trouble in breathing, closing of your throat, hives, rashes, fainting, and swelling of your lips, face, or tongue. Please contact your doctor immediately, if you see any of the above mentioned side effects. Common side effects observed due to intake of this medication are convulsions, abdominal cramps followed by severe watery diarrhea, unusual blood loss or bruising, white patches on the tongue (thrush/ yeast infection), vomiting, mild nausea, or abdominal pain, burning sensation in vagina along with the foul discharge, increase in the frequency of the urination, sore mouth or tongue, and drowsiness. These side effects of generic Ampicillin were observed during the initial dosage and they ebb away as the body gets accustomed with dose of this medication.

Precautions

• People suffering from kidney disorders should take the doctor's advice before taking this antibacterial medicine.
• It can be taken by people suffering from high blood pressure, but strictly under the doctor's supervision.
• Before taking generic Ampicillin, inform your doctor if you have stomach or intestinal disease, or infectious mononucleosis.
• Please avoid this medication if you are having allergy of penicillin or cephalosporin.
• This antibiotic is the FDA pregnancy category B drug. It means that this drug will not harm an unborn baby. So the intake of this drug is considered to be safe for use during pregnancy. But, please inform you doctor for the guidance about the dose of generic Ampicillin.
• This medication passes into breast milk and can cause a yeast infection, diarrhea, or allergic reaction in a nursing infant. So it is advisable to not to take this antibiotic drug.
