FDA Favoring Generics

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in United States is favoring the generic drugs because of their finest quality standards and the reasonable prices. FDA is the major scientific organization in the Unites States that is an authority in the pharmaceutical sector, which approves or rejects the new drugs. It is only after the approval of the FDA that medications are allowed to be sold in the market. Till the last year FDA use to approve only 200 drugs annually, but in the last year FDA has approved around 500 drugs. This reason for the approval of these drugs was the excellent quality maintained by the generic drugs. FDA use to previously recognize generic drugs as the inferior quality drugs, but now the scenario is entirely changed because generic drugs are high in demand and even government is supporting the generic drugs.

FDA itself has now understood that generic drugs are good in the quality and are really a very good option at the time of recession. FDA approves the generic drugs only when it checks its quality standard thoroughly. FDA first checks whether the active constituent of the generic drugs is same like the branded drugs or not, then it also matches the concentration of the active constituent in the generic drugs and the branded drug. FDA also verifies that how the active constituent in the generic drugs is formulated at what is it purification level. FDA checks the side effects of the drugs and matches them with the branded drugs. If the generic drugs clears all these test put by the FDA, then it is undergoes the second test of clinical trials.

Once the drugs clears the clinical trials step then the officials from the FDA visits the manufacturing unit of the generic drugs. It is after all these verifications that generic drugs get the approval. Then for the first six months drugs is allowed to be sold only in the limited pharmaceuticals store so that FDA can study whether the drugs is showing the desired results in patients or not. Finally, the generic drug gets the approval to be sold in the market once it clears all these quality check procedures. So, the customer should not worry about the quality of the generic drugs. Generic drugs are available at very low cost than the branded drugs because these drugs are manufactured in the developing countries that have a currency rate very less in comparison to the dollar. Additionally, generic drugs get the benefit of marketing and advertising done by branded drugs. Thus, generic drugs are 60% to 70% less in price than branded drug.

US govt. saved around 6 million dollars because of the use of the generic drugs by the customers. US govt. has to do very less investment in the generic drugs industry as majority of them are located outside US. Generic drugs are even the favorite choice of the customers so there is an ever increasing demand of these drugs. Customers favor generic drugs because they are having the same effect like the branded drugs but at very low costs. Even the side effects of the generic drugs are same as the active constituent in generic drug and branded drugs is same.

FDA has also started a separate wing for the generic drugs that is paying a stringent attention towards the generic drugs quality and standards. Even the profits made by the generic drug manufacturer are decided by the FDA generic drugs department. This is helping to keep the prices of the generic drugs low. Thus, due to all these things FDA is recommending the use of the generic drugs for the patients, but only after taking to the doctor.
