Dose

Usual Adult Dose for Dysmenorrhea

• 1200 to 3200 mg orally per day in divided doses
• Maximum dose: 3200 mg/day

Usual Adult Dose for Pain

• 200 to 400 mg orally every 4 to 6 hours as needed
• Maximum dose: 3200 mg/day (prescription strength); 1200 mg/day (over-the-counter)

The usual dose for adults is one or two 200mg tablets 3 times a day. If this doesn’t work, doctor may prescribe a higher dose of up to 600mg to take 4 times a day.

Side Effects

• Emergency medical help should be sought if there are signs of an allergic reactions like sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, wheezing, hives, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
• Stop using ibuprofen and call the doctor promptly if there are:
• Alterations in vision
• Dumpiness of breath (even with mild exertion)
• Swelling or quick weight gain
• Any signs of skin rash
• Signs of stomach bleeding like bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds

Common side effects include upset stomach, mild heartburn, nausea, vomiting, bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, dizziness, headache, nervousness, mild itching or rash or tinnitus.

Precautions

• Always take ibuprofen tablets and capsules with food or a drink of milk to reduce the chance of an upset tummy. Don't take it on an empty stomach.
• If you're taking tablets, take the lowest dose for the shortest time. Don't use it for a long time unless you've talked about it with your doctor.
• Ibuprofen doesn't go well with some medicines like-

• Antidepressants
• Antidiabetics

Warnings

Ibuprofen should not be consumed orally if you:

• Are allergic to ibuprofen or any other medicines
• Have previously had a reaction like asthma, a raised, itchy red rash (urticaria), swelling underneath your skin (angioedema) or swelling of the inside of your nose (rhinitis)
• Have consumed aspirin or any other NSAIDs
• Have asthma or another allergic illness
• Are planning pregnancy or are already pregnant or if you're breastfeeding
