Viagra is a tablet that consists of an active ingredient called Sildenafil. This Sildenafil is used to cure the male erectile dysfunction, commonly known as the impotency. Thus the main use of this pill is for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The manufacturer of this pill is Pfizer. Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor and works by preventing the action of a chemical named phosphodiesterase type 5. An erection is basically obtained through many events that take place in the body, which involve the signals from the nervous system and release of certain chemicals in the tissues of the penis. And one such chemical is the cyclic GMP.

The bloods vessels in the penis are widened due to this cyclic GMP, as the thin layer in the blood layer of muscle found in the blood vessels are relaxed. Thus there is now a good flow of blood in the penis which ultimately results in the rigid and erect penis. Basically cyclic GMP is broken down by phosphodiesterase type 5. This is when the sildenafil comes into play and prevents the action of phosphodiesterase type 5 and blocking the breakdown of cyclic GMP. The dose should be taken approximately an hour before the sexual intercourse. Thus this is how the drug works.

There are several warnings regarding this drug. The medicine should not be taken on an empty stomach. You should always be known about the reactions that would occur due to the intake of this pill as it may cause dizziness and virtual disturbances. And if this takes place then one should lie down till feels better. One of the cautions also includes that sildenafil should not be taken with grapefruit as it increases the blood levels of sildenafil and also the chance of side effects. If the erection lasts longer than 4 hours which is called priapism, consult a doctor immediately. Importantly the medicine should be taken only once a day.

This medicine should be taken with caution by elderly persons and persons suffering from decreased kidney and liver function and also cardiovascular disorders. This drug should not be consumed by women, children and young under the age of 18 years. People who have had heart attack, stroke and those who take any form of nitrate medications should avoid this drug. If one feels allergic after taking the medicine, they should consult the doctor immediately.

Sildenafil also has several side effects but not necessarily each one consuming it is prone to it. Side effects include headache, flushing, dizziness, visual disturbances such as blurred vision and blue tinge to vision. The list also includes indigestion, eye pain, red eyes, fainting, nosebleeds, rash, low blood pressure and high blood pressure. Thus as the erectile dysfunction in men is a serious and alarming issue (1 in 10 men are spotted having this disorder in a survey), the sildenafil plays a major role. Hence it should be consumed taking into consideration all the cautions and side effects.
