There are three FDA approved phosphodiesterase ( PDE-5 ) inhibitor drugs; Viagra or sildenafil citrate, Cialis or tadalafil and Levitra or vardenafil hydrochloride. All are safe, effective and popular. The problem arises when a choice has to be made. The mechanism of action of all three drugs is essentially the same I.e. inhibiting PDE-5 and keeping levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate ( cGMP ) in the penis high. Thus aiding in relaxing arteries and vascular muscles and increasing blood flow and consequently causing a natural erection.

In cases of Erectile Dysfunction cGMP is neutralized by PDE-5 resulting in either a flaccid erection or complete absence of erection. Thus this is the point at which the PDE-5 inhibitors act. These allow the much needed cGMP to stay in the penis following sexual stimulation and render the PDE-5 enzyme ineffective. Hence assisting in attaining and maintaining a stiff penis.

The question now arises that on what basis should one choose among the three.Let us begin comparing them starting from their manufacturers; Pfizer makes Viagra, Cialis is made by Eli Lily and ICOS and Levitra is manufactured by Glaxo Smith Kline and Bayer.Their recommended dosages and time of taking the drug is different. Viagra is available in 25mg, 50mg and 100mg tablets; people usually begin with 50mg and adjust the dosage as required.

The advised time of intake is about an hour prior to having intercourse. 5mg, 10mg and 20mg tablets of Cialis are available; patients usually start with 10mg increasing or decreasing the dosage depending on drug tolerance and effectiveness. It is recommended to have Cialis half to twelve hours prior to sex; Cialis soft tablets can be had just fifteen minutes before. Levitra comes in 2.5-mg, 5-mg, 10-mg, and 20-mg pills and people begin with 10mg and change dosage accordingly; it is preferably taken twenty five minutes to one hour before having sex.

The time duration for which their effect lasts also varies. Effect of Cialis lasts the longest about 17 to 36 hours, and then comes Levitras for almost 5 hours and lastly Viagra whose effect lasts for approximately 4 hours. When it comes to cost Cialis is the cheapest. All the three drugs have almost the same success rate with men who will benefit from PDE-5 inhibitors. For those that will not benefit from inhibitors there are other modes of treatment like vacuum pump devices or implants in the penis.

The side effects of all these Generic drugs are also very similar. As mentioned earlier they are minor and short lived and include headaches, stomach and back aches, runny nose, flushes and vision changes.Drug interactions of PDE-5 inhibitors are as follows. They should never be taken with low blood pressure medicines and with high blood pressure medicines only after consultation with your physician. PDE-5 inhibitors are prescription drugs and their self medication can be potentially harmful.

To sum it all up Levitra is the quickest to act and its function does not depend on the food intake, Viagra has a good reputation and is well trusted, whereas, the longest lasting effect is brought abut by Cialis. Hence, the choice is all yours.
